Summary: Alex is stuck between Dean and Sam during the year of the Crossroad’s Demon’s deal.
Series: Why We Fight
Author’s Note: I’m getting back to the story line here for a bit here. I figured it would be interesting to see how she reacts to the boys fighting about Sam saving Dean’s life, Dean finally deciding that he wants to try to live and wanted to take a crack at the boys separating like they did during Time Is On My Side. Each of the stories under the Why We Fight Series are one-shots. They do not tie into each other so enjoy them separately.
Spoilers: Season Three episodes; specifically Time is on my Side and No Rest for the Wicked.

They all come down the stairs, Mrs. Fremont and Dean first. “Alright, no matter what you hear. You, your husband and your daughter stay in the basement,” Dean leans towards the woman and whispers to her. She goes through the basement door and Dean follows.

“Well, I hate to be a "told you so",” Ruby tells Sam as they look around.

“Alright Ruby, where is she?”

“I don't know,” she hisses as they enter the living room.

“Could she get past the sprinklers?”

“Her pay grade, she ain't sweating the holy water,” she answers flippantly.

“Ok, you win,” he turns to her with a determined look on his face. “What do I have to do?”

“What do you mean?” she looks at him questioningly.

“To save Dean,” he reiterates not knowing that his brother had come up behind him. “What do you need me to do?”

“What the hell do you think you're doing?” Dean grabs him from behind, trying to turn him.

“Just shut up for a second,” Sam snaps at him, pulling loose from his grasp. “Ruby!”

“You had your chance. You can't just flip a switch. We needed time.”

“Well, there's gotta be something. There's gotta be some way, whatever it is, I'll do it,” he said in an almost desperate tone. Dean comes up behind him again, grabbing him. “Don't Dean! I'm not gonna let you go to hell, Dean!”

“Yes, you are!” he yells at his brother. “Yes, you are,” he said in a calmer tone. Sam just stares at him, breathing heavily through his nose. “I'm sorry. I mean this is all my fault, I know that. But what you're doing, it's not gonna save me. It's only gonna kill you.”

“Then, what am I supposed to do?” Sam looks away for a second, tears building in his eyes.

“Keep fighting,” Dean said lightly, emotion building in his voice. “Take care of my wheels. Sam, remember what dad taught you... ok?” Sam nods, holding his tears back. “And remember what I taught you.”

As tears build in Dean's eyes, they hear the grandfather clock tick and then begin to strike midnight. Dean looks over at it before he glances over at Sam, who's also watching the grandfather clock. He turns his head, tears spilling down his cheeks, and looks at his older brother. Dean gives him a little smile as he tries to keep himself calm and hold back his tears.

“I'm sorry, Dean. I wouldn't wish this upon my worst enemy,” Ruby said in a sympathetic voice.

Dean's face falls as he turns to where he hears the hounds. Sam looks at him and then glances in the same direction understanding that something's up.

“Hellhound,” Dean said simply.

“Where?”

“There,” he points to where the hellhound is, but Sam can’t see it. As it begins to move, Dean bolts out of the room, followed by the others, and the hellhound quickly behind them. They run into another room and close the doors fast in the face of the hellhound.

Dean takes out the bag with goofer dust as Sam and Ruby stand against the doors, holding it shut while the hellhound is pounding to get in. He runs over, throws himself down on the floor by the door and frantically starts pouring out the dust. The pounding suddenly stops and for a second they all stand/sit still, then Dean bolts for the window and pours out the dust on the windowsill.

“Give me the knife, maybe I can fight it off,” Ruby holds her hand out to Sam.

“What?” Sam looks at her, a bit confused.

“Come on! That dust won't last forever,” she shouts out him.

Dean turns around and looks at them just as Sam takes out the knife, about to hand it to Ruby. “Wait!” he yells at his brother.

“You wanna die?” Ruby fires at Dean.

“Sam, that's not Ruby. It's not Ruby!” Sam turns back to Ruby who, without touching him, flings him hard up against the wall, pinning him. He drops the knife and it falls to the floor. She then hits Dean without touching him and flings him on top of the table, pinning him. Dean grunts as he holds up his head so he can look at her. Sam glances from his brother to the demon. “How long you been in her?” Dean grunts from his pinned position.

Ruby's entire facial expression changes and becomes childlike. Lilith has taken over the body Ruby possessed. “Not long,” she looks down on her body as she speaks. “But I like it. It's all grown up and pretty.” She looks up at Dean again, her eyes turning white.

“And where's Ruby?” Sam asks from his position on the wall.

“She was a very bad girl, so I sent her far, far away,” Lilith said as her eyes turn back to normal. She tilts her head step by step and they can hear her neck crunch with each tilting motion.

“You know, I should have seen it before... but you all look alike to me,” Dean reverts to his sarcastic remarks as his nervous tension rises to an unbearable level.

She ignores the insult and snaps her head towards Sam, who looks over at her. She starts walking slowly towards him. “Hello Sam. I've wanted to meet you for a very long time.” She grabs hold of his chin, forcing him to face her. Against his will she gives him a kiss and their lips sizzle from the contact. “Your lips are soft.”

Sam moves his head up and to the side, trying to get loose from her hand. “Right, so you have me. Let my brother go,” he looks down on her.

“Silly goose. You wanna bargain, you have to have something that I want. You don't.”

“So, is this your big plan, huh? Drag me to hell. Kill Sam. And then what? Become queen bitch?” Dean grumbles at her, trying to get her attention off of Sam.

“I don't have to answer to puppy chow,” Lilith suddenly moves away from Sam, as she looks at Dean, and walks over to the door while Dean follows her with his eyes. She grabs hold of the door handle and opens it. “Sick 'em, boy.”

The goofer dust blows away and the hound runs for Dean. It grabs him by his legs and pulls him down as he screams. It begins to rip into him while Sam stands against the wall, helpless, scared and panicked.

“No! Stop!” Sam screams.

Lilith just looks over at Sam and then down at Dean, who's struggling on the floor. The hound has already slashed his right leg and is now attacking his chest as he screams in pain. He turns over to his stomach.

“STOP IT!” Sam cries out as he helplessly watches his brother mauled to death. Lilith just watches with a little smile on her face. The hound slashes Dean on his back and his shoulder. “No!” Dean flips over and it slashes him over his chest, blood gushing out. Sam can only watch in horror. “No. Stop it,” Sam begs, as he knows the end is coming. Dean is fighting for his last breaths now. “STOP IT!” The blood pours out of Dean's chest and he's not screaming anymore, but still not dead. “NO!” Sam screams again with tears streaming from his eyes.

“Yes,” Lilith smiles at Sam. She holds out her hand and suddenly white light erupts from it. As it builds up Sam turns his head, eyes closed. Suddenly her white light retracts, her eyes are still white but slowly turn back to normal, and she looks confused and shocked. Sam is on the floor, huddled in a corner next to a cabinet, holding his hands up in front of his face. When he notices nothing happened and the light is gone he slowly lowers his hands, looks up at her and rises up to a standing position. She looks at the floor, afraid. She holds out her hand and looks at him. “Back.” Sam takes a breath and starts walking towards her. “I said, back,” she repeats the command but her power no longer has an effect on him.

Sam bends down with a determined look on his face, and picks up Ruby's knife. Lilith is very afraid of him now, as he just looks determined and hateful. “I don't think so,” he pulls back his hand, and moves to stab her but suddenly Lilith’s essence exits Ruby's body. Black smoke rushes out of her body as she screams until she finally collapses, an empty vessel on the floor, next to Dean. He isn't moving, his eyes opened. He's dead. Sam looks down on him breathing heavily.

A window shatters into several shards as Alex flies through it, rolls on the floor, coming to a stop in a crouch on the floor. She is covered in blood and fueled by the fury of the battle she just endured. She is inches from the bloody, torn body of her lover. Her mouth falls open; her eyes wide with tears as she glances up at her other love.

With tears building up quickly, Sam slowly walks over to Dean. He begins to cry as he bends down next to him. He picks up his brother, holding his head close to him. “No...No…Dean...” he cries and mourns his brother, while Alex holds her emotions at bay, watching over Sam. “Dean...”

There are chains everywhere, stretched from place to place that can't be seen through the darkness. It rumbles like a thunderstorm here with lightning splitting the black. He screams. He’s suspended in the middle of the chains, hooks in his arms and legs.

“HELP! NO! SOMEBODY HELP ME!” he screams in stark terror. “ALEX!” his eyes dart around, desperate for a way out. “SAM!!” Blood is pouring from the wounds the hooks made in his shoulder and leg with more blood on his lips. If he could think straight, he’d know he’s only felt this way maybe twice in his life, absolutely terrified. “SAAAAAAAM!!!!!”

Kevin ran to the door, pulling it open to find his crimson-covered cousin standing there. “Lex,” he said breathlessly, unsure if he should touch her. “Are you alright, darlin?”

“No,” she shook her head sadly. “Sam and I need your help,” she said when her tears began to flow uncontrollably down her face. He caught her in his arms just as her legs buckled and she pitched forward. She was out cold.

“Sam?” Kevin’s mouth hung open when the young man appeared out of nowhere also covered in blood.

“Give her to me, please,” Sam said through a scratchy throat, holding out his arms. He took Alex’s pliant form from her cousin and held her close to his chest before he raised his dead eyes to the man. “We could really use your help,” he choked out. “It would mean the world to her,” he glanced down at his love.

“I’m there for you both,” Kevin said as he pulled the door shut behind him. “No matter how long and whatever you need,” he placed his hand on Sam’s shoulder, meeting the young man’s eyes until he nodded and walked off with Alex.

Before Lilith can react, Alex swipes her blade upward at an angle across the invisible hound that Dean is barely keeping at bay.

“No!” Lilith yells when her hound is dispatched by the enchanted sword the woman wields. She sweeps her hand out in an arc to fling the woman across the room.

Just as Alex begins to sail through the air, she throws her blade towards the body that Ruby once inhabited. Her head impacts the wall, blinding lights flash beneath her eyelids before she slumps to the floor. She cracks open her eyes, expecting to be pinned to the wall and surprised that she isn’t. She sees Sam crouching beside Dean, now freed from Lilith’s telekinetics. Her eyes drift over to see her blade protruding from the woman’s chest before darkness sweeps in to claim her.

Kevin ran to the door, pulling it open to find the crimson-covered lover of his cousin standing there. “Sam,” he said breathlessly, unsure if he should touch him. “Are you alright, man?”

“I could really use your help,” he said through a tight throat with tears streaming down his face.

It was touch and go for a few days. Bobby and Kevin sat nearby in chairs; they even slept in them while Sam sat at the foot of the bed. He didn’t sleep, not for a single minute while he kept a silent vigil over his loved ones.

It took hours to work on Dean’s many wounds. He and Bobby worked in tandem, cleaning him up before stitching him together and bandaging the many deep gashes. Kevin cleaned up Alex’s wounds. None of them were deep except the one on her head that kept her unconscious. When all the medical issues were dealt with, they left them both in bed to heal and waited it out.

Sam held his breath when Alex cracked open her eyes, looked blearily at him before she glanced at her side, sighed when she saw Dean lying there and fell back into blessed unconsciousness.

Another day passed before Dean finally opened his eyes. “Am I in hell?” he said through a hoarse throat.

“No,” Sam whispered with tears in his eyes.

“What happened?”

“You were almost dead when Alex dove in through a window and took out the hound with her sword.”

“What about Lilith?” Dean said in a clearer tone.

“Dead,” Sam wiped his eyes and glanced to Dean’s side. “She did it just before she smashed into a wall.”

“How?”

“I don’t know,” he shook his head.

“Lex?” Dean groaned as he rolled to his side and palmed her cheek. “Baby, wake up.”

“I’m up,” she mumbled.

“What did you do?” he asked with a furrowed brow.

“I did what I had to.”

“How did you do it, Lex?” he snapped at her, waking Bobby and Kevin.

“It’s not what you think so pull your shorts out of your ass,” she grumbled before she rolled over, wincing from the pain in her head. “I traveled to many places before I met you two. I learned a lot along the way, including the craft. It took me til the moment we hit the road to come here to find the spell I needed to engrave in my blade but the damn thing worked and I couldn’t be more thankful to my brother.”

“What do you mean, baby?” Sam knelt next to the bed, placing a hand on her side.

“I studied anything I could on demons after Azazel killed our mother. When his telepathy emerged, I went further than ever in an attempt to free him from it,” she covered her eyes for a moment, wiping her tears before she looked at Dean. “If it wasn’t for Darius, I’d never have found the spell to make the blade a demon-killer.”

“Did you have this the whole time, Lex?”

“No, Dean,” she smiled softly. “But I did have the ability to write the spell. It just took me a long time to get it right.”

“That’s what you were doing when we lost him,” Sam said when it dawned on him. “I saw you engrave that thing a billion times, changing it after each hunt. That’s what you were doing, testing the spell?”

“Yep,” she nodded her head with a smile. “Didn’t know the damn thing worked til tonight or whenever it happened. What day is it anyways?”

“The day our life starts over,” Dean leaned forward, kissing her gently on her lips.

Sam dropped his head to her side, trembling as he cried until he felt her shift. “Come here, baby,” Alex whispered, scooting closer to Dean to make room for him to crawl in behind her. Sam wrapped himself around her body while Dean burrowed into her chest. “We did it, Sammy,” she whispered to him as he finally drifted off to sleep, his exhaustion and worry finally taking its toll. “We saved our family.”

“I knew you were amazing when I met you but I didn’t know you were a miracle,” Dean whispered against her lips. “I love you, ya know?”

“Eh,” she shrugged her shoulders. “I have my uses,” she broke out with a smile before his lips merged with hers.
